Our Sales Team Talks About the Community

Our sales team can’t quite get over how rapidly the area around Glenmore and Highland Park has transformed into a vibrant and accessible neighbourhood.

Connie, one of our sales representatives at Glenmore, recently returned from her maternity leave, and she was quite struck by the community’s development in the past year: “Everything is so close by and accessible. It’s like being downtown, but it’s much more peaceful.”

Amanda and Victoria, sales representatives from Glenmore and Highland Park respectively, are equally taken by the area’s urban vibe.

“When I think back to 2008 when I first started working out here, I am absolutely amazed as to the amount of development, both commercial and residential,” comments Victoria. “This area has not only developed, but has been transformed into a beautiful community, rich with amenities, home and shopping.”

“With the amount stores and amenities nearby, it’s become the suburbia Yaletown,” remarks Amanda.

The feedback our team has received from potential homeowners like you has been overwhelmingly positive as well.

People continue to comment that they really appreciate the fact that they can walk across the street and get a cup of coffee. And still have access to wonderful schools and beautiful parkways.

Then there are, of course, the homes.

Looking to Hit the Slopes? Here Are Our Top 3 Mountain Destinations

It’s time to take advantage of the incredible weather we’ve been having, and hit the mountains—a relatively easy weekend getaway considering, Glenmore and Highland Park’s location.

From Baker to Whistler and skiing to tobogganing, here are some of the best slopes to hit for the entire family.

Mt Baker
Escaping for a ski-filled weekend couldn’t be easier at Glenmore and Highland Park. A half hour drive will have you in Bellingham ready to rock those slopes, depending on the border lineup, of course.

Top-notch skiers and boarders will love the fact that Baker offers premium rentals. Along with beginner to intermediate level rentals available at upper Heather Meadows, top-of-the-line skis and snowboards – including this year’s current models – are available at the lower White Salmon base area (mile marker 52) on all operation days.

Whistler Blackcomb
From Glenmore and Highland Park, BC’s mountain jewel WhistlerBlackcomb is more of a trek, but it’s well worth it to check out the world record-breaking Peak 2 Peak Gondola. An approximate two-and-a-half hour drive will bring you into the village where you can get settled before you get up-close-and-personal with the mountains from the Peak 2 Peak. This engineering marvel breaks three world records:

  • Longest unsupported span of 3.024 kilometres
  • Highest lift of its kind at 436 metres above the valley floor
  • Completes the longest continuous lift system on the globe

Even better, March is family month, so there are opportunities for kids to stay, ski and rent for free.

Cypress Mountain
A must for the young and the young at heart. The North Shore’s Cypress Mountain is home to one of the best Snow Tube Parks in the Lower Mainland, and it’s only an hour and a half from Glenmore and Highland Park.

Feel the thrill of sliding down chutes in a snow tube and let Cypress’s tube tow do all the work getting you back up the slope. It makes for a great day trip too, if a full weekend is out of the question.

Upcoming Calendar Events for December 2010

Never does a day go by at Glenmore and Highland Park where something isn’t happening. That’s especially true now that the holiday season is upon us. But there’s also lots going on in the surrounding area.

To help you muddle your way through your holiday calendar, we thought we’d highlight a few upcoming events in the immediate area and beyond.

Realtors Care Blanket Drive
Starting Monday, November 29th and continuing through to Monday, December 6th, realtors all over the Fraser Valley will be collecting bags, scarves, hats and undergarments for the homeless. A few warm and cozy items will make such a difference for a lot of people this winter. If you have anything suitable to give away, it would be greatly appreciated.

Anthony Sedlak at Kitchen Therapy
Did you know that Glenmore and Highland Park’s neighbourhood kitchen store, Kitchen Therapy, offers cooking classes along with their top-of-the-line kitchen utensils, cook and bakeware? On Wednesday, December 1st from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Anthony Sedlak, celebrity chef and host of Food Network Canada’s The Main, will be teaching his pupils how to create a Moroccan fruit and nut couscous with warm organic chicken and lemon dressing, a conchiglie pasta with smoked bacon and creamed spinach and chocolate peanut butter cream pots. Our mouths are watering already.

Sounds of Christmas in White Rock
Enjoy the sounds of the Welsh Men’s Choir as they return this year to White Rock Baptist Church. Featuring traditional and modern Christmas music as well as “something zany” this evening is sure to lift your spirits. The carols and hymns begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 3rd with tickets ranging from $22 to $25.

Santa’s Big Rigs for Kids Parade
What’s cooler than getting a “honkin’ highway holler” from a big rig? Seeing it up-close-and-personal covered in festive lights, of course! This year, the big rig trucks will be all lit up in Holland Park. Head down to the park at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 5th with a donation for the Surrey Christmas Bureau to enjoy a night of fun activities, live music and refreshments with the entire family.

Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights
On Sunday, December 5th, Surrey will hold its fifth annual Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights. Bring a non-perishable food item or children’s toy for either the Surrey Food Bank or the Surrey Christmas Bureau and then prepare to be dazzled by a parade of floats, marching bands and twinkling lights.  The parade starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Cloverdale fairgrounds parking lot and will make its way to historic 176th Street in downtown Cloverdale.

To Decant or Not To Decant at Everything Wine
This one’s for adults only. We mentioned a couple of weeks ago that Glenmore and Highland Park’s local wine store, Everything Wine, regularly hosts wine makers, wine tasting events and a variety of food and pairing courses. Their Tasting Bar will be the locale for another free event on Monday, December 6th. From 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., learn about the benefits behind decanting your wine, and enjoy a few taste tests in the process.

Breakfast with Santa at the YMCA
Hopefully you’ve got your Christmas wish-list prepared because Old Saint Nick is on his way. This year, your little ones can join him for a special breakfast at the Tong Louie YMCA on Saturday, December 11th. Seating times will be at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Call the YMCA to register at 604-575-9622. Children $5, Adults $8

Stewart Farms Christmas Open House
You and the family are invited to enjoy Christmas the old-fashioned way at Stewart Farms. Make holiday crafts and munch on delicious woodstove-baked treats or simply wander around the 1894 farmhouse decorated to the period for the holiday season. Best of all, it’s only a 12-minute drive from Glenmore and Highland Park. The open house takes place on Saturday, December 11th from noon to 4 p.m.

Train Ride and Visit with Santa at Bear Creek Park
Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without a Christmas train. Fortunately, you have plenty of time to meet up with Eddy the Engine and Chough the Steam Locomotive at Surrey’s Bear Creek Park. The train, which takes passenger through a Christmas forest display and Santa’s Golden Reindeer Tunnel, runs from Friday, December 3rd to Sunday, January 2nd. Children $6, Adults $7

One of the best things about living at Glenmore and Highland Park has to be the strong sense of community. And what better time to get out and experience it than in the heart of the holiday season?

Is Your Home Winter Ready?

They’re calling for snow this weekend. Are you ready?

With cooler days and cooler nights just around the corner courtesy of Jack Frost, we thought there was no better time than now to provide you with a few helpful tips to winterize your home.

As a new homeowner at Glenmore or Highland Park, you won’t have to worry about having the furnace serviced or replacing the hot water heater. Nor will you need to worry about cracks in the foundation or weatherstripping gaps and holes around the windows and doors of your home. But there is still plenty you can do to make your home winter ready:

1)   If you haven’t already, clean dry and store all summer gardening equipment.

2)   Drain all of the garden hoses.

3)   Drain the gas from the lawnmower before storing it away for the winter.

4)   Clean out the gutters and use a hose to spray down the downspouts and clear debris.

5)   Trim any tree branches that are hanging too close to the house or electrical wires.

6)   Uncover all south-facing windows to let as much sunlight into your home as possible.

7)   Keep all closet doors closed when possible. There’s no need to heat a space that isn’t in use.

8)   Unplug all electronics and appliances that are not being used. They use energy even when they’re not in use, and unplugging them when you’re not home will help offset the increase in usage.

9)   Reverse the direction of your ceiling fan. Reversing the ceiling fan will actually push warm air downward and keep warm air circulating.

10)  Finally, avoid applying any rock salt to your roof to melt ice or snow. It can damage shingles, and possibly void the manufacturer’s warranty.

There are lots resources available full of information about preparing your home for the winter. The above list is just a quick rundown of some of the simple things you can do to help you feel comfortable and cozy in your new home.

A Taste for the Holidays at Everything Wine

It’s that time of year. Time to start preparing for the holiday season. And we’ve got just the event to kick off your holiday prep in festive fashion!

It’s called “A Taste for the Holidays,” and it’s happening this weekend at Glenmore and Highland Park’s local wine store, Everything Wine.

One of the biggest wine stores in BC, Everything Wine regularly hosts wine makers, wine tasting events and a variety of food and pairing courses, but we especially love their Tasting Bar where all events are free.

As we mentioned, from November 12 to 15 between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., it’s all about tantalizing your taste buds for the holidays as Everything Wine’s Tasting Bar will be presenting a selection of party wines that are perfect for stocking up the cellar this winter. It’s an excellent opportunity to try before you buy and expand your knowledge about wine.

Time to Tee Off

Thinking about booking a tee time? We’ve got the rundown to South Surrey’s hotspots if you’re a golfer. From challenging courses to beginner par threes and weekend warriors to full-fledged golf junkies there’s a fairway for everyone.

Morgan Creek Golf Club

An easy 12-minute drive from Highland Park and Glenview, Morgan Creek Golf Club is home to an 18-hole, par-72 course as well as a Golf Teaching Academy and Equipment Fitting Centre. With stunning views of Mount Baker and the Golden Ears Mountain Range, it’s the ideal destination to catch the sun’s rays and indulge in some our province’s super natural beauty. Finish off the game with a refreshing beverage or stay for a full three-course dinner from Morgan’s Restaurant and Wine Bar, which overlooks the 6,967-yard course. Both the course and the restaurant are open to the public year-round.

Hazelmere Golf Club

Hazelmere Golf Course was originally built in 1962, but underwent an extensive renovation in 2003. The renovated Hazelmere includes a natural grass practice facility with five target greens and a practice fairway bunker. Located between the US border and Langley and a mere 10-minute drive from the Morgan Heights area, you’ll find both professional and amateur golfers teeing off at this 18-hole course or relaxing in the one of the Clubhouse’s Panorama, Garden or Fireside Rooms.  And Hazelmere offers more than just golf. Boasting four indoor tennis courts, Hazelmere Tennis club is reputed to be one of the finest tennis facilities in the Fraser Valley. Drop the kids for tennis lessons, while you hit the green!

Peace Portal Golf Club

A golf course steeped in history. Peace Portal Golf Course was the pet project of Seattle lawyer Sam Hill. Most famously known for constructing the International Peace Arch, Hill hoped that Peace Portal would become an internationally renowned course. Now in its 82nd year, the 18-hole course receives regular visitors from the lower mainland and the neighbouring US. Border lineup looking a little too long? Grab a coffee at the Clubhouse and practice your chipping at the chipping green.

Meridian Golf Par 3

There’s no website for Meridian Par 3, but trust us when we say this is one of the prettiest golf courses in South Surrey. The land for this 18-hole course used to be occupied by a hazelnut farm (an old nut house still stands near the 18th tee). Now, a sea of tall cedars and weeping willows add to the picturesque beauty of the family-run Meridian Golf Par 3. Of course, these majestic trees do make some of the holes a little trickier to see! The course and clubhouse are open year-round, weather permitting.

So go on, grab your golf bag and get ready to drive the range.

Outdoor Movies for a Good Cause

Summer is about staying up late and taking advantage of bright evenings. It’s about soaking up the sun’s rays in the day and relaxing amidst a warm breeze at night. It’s about indulging yourself a little more than usual and embarking on new adventures.

And with fall fast approaching, it only makes sense to take full advantage of those few remaining summer nights. So why not venture out to one of beautiful South Surrey’s outdoor movie nights?

Following in the footsteps of the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association who has been hosting an annual movie night in Holland Park for the past six years, Morgan Crossinghas introduced their own movie under the stars at the corner of 24th Ave and Croydon Drive – just inside Morgan Crossing Village.

We couldn’t wait to get down there last week, especially after we learned the movie was going to be one of our favourite childhood classics, Steven Spielberg’s E.T. Curled up with a blanket, a bag of potato chips and some candy gummies, we took a trip down memory lane.

And for a good cause. The outdoor movie night is by donation, with all proceeds going to the Surrey Food Bank.

The third largest Food Bank in British Columbia, Surrey Food Bank helps feed 15,000 people per month, while providing food support for a number of recovery houses, safe houses, youth centres, and soup kitchen. And that’s something we’re keen to get behind.

Living at Glenmore and Highland Park, you can be part of this full life.

There’s one more Sunday showing, and it’s happening this Sunday, September 5th. It’s the ideal opportunity to give back to this growing area of the Lower Mainland. And it’s such a cool way to enjoy a night out with family and friends.

Back to School

We’ve got the low down on schools in the area.

You want more from where you live. A stylishly inspired community is important to you, but you also want to ensure that the necessary amenities for raising a young family are in place. And with a new school year just around the corner, having good schools nearby must be top of mind when you’re looking for your new home.

Fortunately, White Rock/South Surrey is part of the largest public school district in B.C., School District 36, which has 99 public elementary schools and 21 public high schools, not to mention the numerous private and Montessori schools in the region.

Located on 26 Avenue, just a five-minute drive from Glenmore and Highland Park, Pacific Heights will most likely be the elementary school for students living in the neighbourhood. Home of the Phoenix, Pacific Heights Elementary is Kindergarten to Grade 7.

Jessie Lee Elementary

A short drive over the King George Highway is Jessie Lee. Another K-7 school in the area, the school’s motto is “Reach for the Sky.” Jessie Lee’s enrollment as of September 2009 was 251.

Ecole Crescent Park School

Ecole Crescent Park School has been serving the Crescent beach community for 60 years, and the Annex for 90 years. They are the only elementary school in the area to offer a late French immersion program with students entering the program in Grade 6.

Sunnyside Elementary School

Sunnyside is one of the few K-7 schools to have a Montessori-based program and neighbourhood-based program in a public school system, which has attracted a diverse group of students.

A new school is slated to open in September 2012.

Earl Marriott Secondary School

Early Marriott Secondary is situated on the border of South Surrey and White Rock. It is the largest French immersion secondary school in western Canada, teaching students from Grade 8 through to Grade 12. Currently, the student population sits at about 1,700. Due to its vicinity, it will likely be school of choice for high-school students in the Glenmore and Highland Park area.

Semiahmoo Secondary School

Located right on 148th Street, Semiahmoo Secondary takes students from Grade 8 to Grade 12. For its Grade 11 and Grade 12 students, Semiahmoo offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. The two-year IB program provides an accelerated program of studies. Students have the opportunity to earn university course credits leading to preferred admission to university programs.

Elgin Park Secondary School

Elgin Park Secondary is the third and final public secondary school in the White Rock/South Surrey area. Along with Earl Marriott and Semiahmoo, Elgin Park offers the Hockey Canada Skills Academy. The Academy provides high-school students with a passion and interest in the great Canadian game, with the opportunity to develop their skills and hockey knowledge.

Looking for a private school? Situated within the burgeoning neighbourhood surrounding Glenmore and Highland Park, Southridge offers a university-directed program from kindergarten to Grade 12. The co-ed campus has a full sports program with first-class facilities and playing fields, and has a strong fine arts focus.

Roots & Wings is about a 15-minute drive from Glenmore and Highland Park, but it is one of the few Montessori schools to offer babycare, daycare and primary Montessori (two-and-a-half to five year olds) as well as intermediate and senior Montessori (six to 12 year olds) right the way through to secondary Montessori (12 to 15 year olds).

An Ideal Place to Raise a Family

South Surrey’s burgeoning Morgan Heights neighbourhood is a great place to grow, and grow up. Indoor and outdoor activities in the form of clubs, camps and kids venues for your little (and not so little) ones abound, minutes from your doorstep. So, if you’re looking to move with a young one in tow or are planning to start a family soon, we recommend starting here.

Historic Stewart Farmhouse
Just a 12-minute drive from Morgan Heights sits the historic Stewart Farmhouse. First built in 1894, by pioneer John Stewart, the Stewart farmhouse is a now a place for visitors and residents alike to enjoy heritage activities, crafts and home baking. Costumed tour guides will take you through the house, and teach you about life in Surrey in the Victorian period. What’s more, in the summer months, the Stewart Farmhouse offers various children’s daycamps – and that’s great news for you and the kids. They can spend a day at the farm doing things the old-fashioned way, while you can enjoy a quiet lunch with friends.

Serpentine Fen
An interesting and inexpensive way to enjoy the outdoors with your kids. Located 10 minutes from Morgan Heights by car, Serpentine Fen, also called the Serpentine Wildlife Area, is a 150-acre habitat with more than 130 different bird species. There are a number of designated public trails and three covered viewing towers to help spot eagles, hawks, blue herons and more. September and October are the best months for birding, as many birds take shelter in the Fen, but you may also come across frogs, coyotes and even harbour seals. Don’t forget the binoculars!

The South Surrey Indoor Pool
This is a great venue for learning and playing. Register your little ones in swim lessons or just head to the pool for a day of fun. The indoor pool has six 25-metre lanes and two diving boards as well as a children’s pool and whirlpool. And the Pool hosts youth activities on Friday and Saturday nights. Pre-teen pool parties complete with a DJ and games, and Swim Play, which includes swimming followed by a movie and popcorn are popular Saturday night events. Conveniently, located 10 minutes from Morgan Heights.

Softball City
One of the coolest locations for any kid who loves sports has to be Softball City. It is the premiere sports and entertainment complex with four championship calibre diamonds, and it’s one more venue that is located only 10 minutes away from Morgan Heights. It’s an ideal location for fundraisers and birthday parties, or just watching a league or tournament game.

Add the fact that White Rock/South Surrey is part of the largest public school district in B.C., School District 36 (which has 99 public elementary schools and 21 public high schools), and we think you’ll find that Morgan Heights is quite an exciting place to live.
